Obanazawa: Land of Hanagasa Dance

Obanazawa City is the birthplace of the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival dance. At the Hanagasa Tradition Hall on the shore of Lake Tokura, you can learn about the history of Hanagasa dance and receive hands-on instruction in the dance itself. A miniature hat-making experience using safflower-dyed hats is also popular. In summer, a fireworks festival is also held at Lake Tokura, and you can experience the charm of this simple rural village, known as a specialty area for watermelons.
