Warabi-juku: A Stroll Through Nakasendo Post Town
Walk through Warabi-juku, a post town on the Nakasendo. Step back in time to the Edo period in the historic streets of Japan's smallest city.
Warabi City, Saitama Prefecture, is known as Japan's smallest city by area, but it has a history as Warabi-juku, the second post town of the Nakasendo's 69 stations. Along the old Nakasendo, stone monuments marking the sites of the honjin and waki-honjin inns remain, allowing visitors to stroll while feeling the traces of the Edo period. The annual "Warabi-juku Festival" held in May features period costume processions and local gourmet food stalls. At the Warabi Folk Museum, you can learn the history of the post town, and Meiji period brick buildings still stand nearby. A compact town walk where you can fully savor history.
