Cape Soya
Japan's northernmost point. Magnificent scenery where Sakhalin can be seen across the Soya Strait.
Cape Soya is Japan's northernmost point, located at 45°31'22" N latitude. From the cape where a monument inscribed 'Japan's Northernmost Point' stands, you can see the silhouette of Sakhalin (Karafuto) across the Soya Strait on clear days. The area features attractions including a statue of Mamiya Rinzo, a former naval observation tower, and Cape Soya Lighthouse, and there is also a gift shop that issues certificates of reaching the northernmost point. In winter, drift ice drifts ashore, revealing a harsh yet beautiful landscape vastly different from summer. Standing at the edge of Japan evokes an extraordinary feeling.
