Takaoka Daibutsu and Foundry Town Walk
A historical stroll exploring one of Japan's Three Great Buddhas and 400 years of casting culture
The Takaoka Daibutsu, one of Japan's Three Great Buddhas alongside those in Nara and Kamakura, is a handsome Buddha statue created using the finest techniques of copper casting, Takaoka's traditional industry. The surrounding area features Kanaya-machi, a foundry artisan district with 400 years of history, where the streetscape of senbon-koshi latticed houses is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. You can enjoy experiences unique to this craftsman's town, such as tin accessory-making workshops and cafes where you can savor drinks and food served in cast metal vessels.
