Sumida River Fireworks Festival
Tokyo's largest fireworks festival where approximately 20,000 fireworks illuminate the night sky. A summer tradition that draws about 950,000 people along the Sumida River.
The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is a Tokyo summer tradition that traces its lineage to Japan's oldest fireworks festival that began in 1733. Held annually on the last Saturday of July, approximately 20,000 fireworks are launched from the first and second venues combined. The spectacular view of Tokyo Skytree alongside the fireworks is a uniquely Tokyo sight. The area around the venues gets extremely crowded, so viewing from hidden spots in Asakusa or Mukojima, or from yakatabune pleasure boats is recommended. On the day of the fireworks festival, the entire town is wrapped in a festive atmosphere with people dressed in yukata.
