Tochigi Prefecture is a major production area for kanpyo, accounting for 98% of Japan's nationwide production. On farms in Kanuma City, you can experience the traditional process of making kanpyo by peeling bottle gourds thinly and lengthily with specialized tools. Peeling a bottle gourd about 30 cm in diameter with a knife while rotating it is harder than it looks, and you will be amazed by the skilled techniques of the elderly farmers. The peeled kanpyo is sun-dried and will be sent to you later as a souvenir. A precious summer-only experience.
