Sounkyo
A grand canyon featuring columnar jointed cliffs spanning the area. The spectacular Gingawa Falls and Ryuusei Falls are among Japan's best, and the autumn foliage is magnificent.
Sounkyo is a magnificent gorge located within Daisetsuzan National Park, featuring columnar jointed cliffs extending approximately 24 kilometers. In particular, Gingawa Falls and Ryuusei Falls are famous waterfalls selected for Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The contrast between the delicate and graceful Gingawa Falls and the powerful Ryuusei Falls is spectacular. In autumn, the entire gorge turns brilliant with fall colors, offering some of Japan's earliest autumn foliage viewing in the Daisetsuzan mountain range. Taking the Kurogane Ropeway up to 1,300 meters elevation reveals panoramic views of the majestic Daisetsuzan mountains. In winter, the Hyouben Festival featuring frozen waterfalls is magical.
