Shinjo Matsuri Float Procession
Experience the splendid and magnificent floats of the Shinjo Matsuri, registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Shinjo Matsuri, held annually from August 24-26, is a festival registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage with a history of over 260 years. The 20 floats (dashi) created by various town associations are moving works of art that recreate scenes from kabuki and historical stories with intricate dolls and decorations. When night falls, lanterns are lit, and they parade through a fantastical atmosphere. Sacred palanquin processions and traditional performances such as the shishi odori are also highlights. These three days, when the small town of 30,000 people is filled with excitement, showcase the depth of Tohoku's festival culture.
