Shikotsu-ko Ice Festival
千歳市, Hokkaido
A magical winter festival featuring fantastical ice sculptures that sparkle, created from the crystal-clear waters of Lake Shikotsu
The Shikotsu-ko Ice Festival is a winter tradition held annually from late January to mid-February. Massive ice sculptures line the venue, created by spraying water from Lake Shikotsu, which boasts some of Japan's clearest waters. During the day, they shine in a natural blue color called "Shikotsu Blue," and at night they are illuminated to create a fantastical atmosphere. Fireworks displays are also held, making this one of Hokkaido's premier winter events.
