大津市, Shiga
A historical walk through Sakamoto, Mount Hiei's temple town, exploring the Anao-built stone walls and sato-bo hermitages
Sakamoto in Otsu City is a historic settlement that flourished as a temple town for Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei. The beautiful stone walls built by the Anao group and the sato-bo hermitages (monastic retreats) that line the streets form a townscape designated as a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District. The autumn foliage at Hiyoshi Taisha is also magnificent, and in autumn a spectacular landscape unfolds where stone walls and vividly colored leaves interweave.
