Shibetsu Salmon Science Museum
標津郡標津町, Hokkaido
An interactive museum where you can learn about salmon ecology up close
The Shibetsu Salmon Science Museum is Japan's only aquarium specializing in salmonid fish. In autumn, you can observe salmon swimming upstream up close from the fish ladder observation room inside the museum, and the "finger sucking experience" where sturgeon suck on your fingers is a unique attraction found only here. In the large aquarium, salmon and trout swim gracefully, and through the exhibits you can learn about the salmon's life cycle and Hokkaido's fishing culture. This is a facility that can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults.
