Sendai Tanabata Festival
Japan's finest Tanabata festival, continuing since the era of Date Masamune. Approximately 3,000 magnificent bamboo decorations adorn the shopping streets.
The 'Sendai Tanabata Festival,' held annually from August 6-8, is Japan's finest Tanabata festival with a history of over 400 years dating back to the era of Date Masamune. Approximately 3,000 magnificent bamboo decorations are hung along the shopping streets extending from in front of Sendai Station, with each shop competing with their ingeniously designed Tanabata ornaments. The seven types of decorations—including streamers, folded cranes, and paper garments—carry wishes for bountiful harvests and household safety. The eve festival fireworks display is also popular, and this festival is one of Tohoku's three major festivals, attracting over 2 million visitors annually.
