Sawara Grand Festival and the Little Edo Townscape
A Little Edo along the Tone River selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. A charming water town where Edo-period merchant houses line the streets.
Sawara is known as the "Little Edo of Hokuso," where Edo-period merchant houses line the banks of the Ono River, a tributary of the Tone River. Selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, this historic townscape features the former residence of Ino Tadataka and other attractions. The willow-lined Ono River and traditional storehouse-style buildings create a photogenic scene. The Sawara Grand Festival, held three times a year, is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, featuring spectacular processions of festival floats carrying 5-meter-tall dolls. Visitors can also enjoy the water town scenery on boat tours.
