Yamaori Warehouse in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture is a group of 12 earthen warehouses built in 1893 as a storage facility for Shonai rice. Behind the warehouses, 36 large zelkova trees stand in rows, blocking sunlight in summer and protecting from seasonal winds from the Japan Sea in winter. The contrast between white walls and dark wooden walls is beautiful, and it is also known as a filming location for the NHK morning drama 'Oshin.' Currently, part of it is open to the public as the Shonai Rice History Museum and a tourism and local products shop, conveying the history of Sakata as a merchant city.
