Tokigawa: Ogawa Washi Paper-Making Experience
Experience paper-making with Ogawa washi, inheriting the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage tradition of Hosokawa paper. Create your own original work with handmade washi paper.
Ogawa Town, adjacent to Tokigawa Town in Saitama Prefecture, is a center of washi papermaking with a history of 1,300 years. In workshops that inherit the techniques of Hosokawa washi, registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, you can experience paper-making. Craftspeople guide you through the process of making washi paper by dissolving kozo fibers into liquid, filtering them with a su-keta frame, and drying. You can create original washi paper by incorporating flowers and leaves for decoration—frame and display it as wall art or use it as stationery. A precious experience to touch upon Japan's traditional techniques.
