Ryogoku Kokugikan · Sumo Museum
The sacred home of Japan's national sport, Grand Sumo. Three tournaments are held annually, and the adjoining Sumo Museum offers the opportunity to learn about its history and culture.
Built in 1985, Ryogoku Kokugikan is the sacred home of Grand Sumo's Tokyo tournaments (January, May, September). From approximately 11,000 spectator seats, visitors can watch powerful matches. Grilled chicken and chanko bento sold in the building during tournaments are also famous specialties. The adjoining Sumo Museum displays the decorative loincloths and ranking charts of past yokozuna. The surrounding area has numerous famous chanko restaurants, and visitors can sometimes observe morning training at sumo stables. An area where you can fully experience sumo culture.
