Osaka, Osaka
A tour of the temple complex and gardens of Shitennoji, Japan's oldest state temple founded by Prince Shotoku
Shitennoji, founded by Prince Shotoku in 593, is Japan's oldest state temple. The Shitennoji-style temple layout, where the middle gate, five-story pagoda, golden hall, and lecture hall are arranged in a straight line, is the origin of Japanese temple architecture. The Gokuraku Jodo Garden is a beautiful Japanese garden expressing Pure Land Buddhist philosophy, where flowers of all seasons bloom splendidly. The monthly festivals on the 21st and 22nd are also lively.
