Soja・Kibitsu Shrine and the Momotarō Legend
A shrine enshrining Kibi no Tsuhiko no Mikoto, said to be the model for the Momotarō Legend. The Narukamajinji ritual and beautiful corridors are highlights.
Kibitsu Shrine in Okayama City is an ancient shrine enshrining Ō-Kibi no Tsuhiko no Mikoto, who is said to be the model for the Momotarō legend. A 360-meter-long corridor winds along the natural topography, embodying the beauty of Japanese architecture. The main sanctuary is designated a National Treasure for its distinctive Hiyoku Irimoya-zukuri architectural style—the only one of its kind in Japan. The Narukamajinji ritual offers visitors a unique experience of divining good and bad fortune by the sound of a sounding cauldron, allowing them to touch the mystical worldview of the ancient Kibi Kingdom. Early summer brings hydrangeas that grace the corridors with color.
