Oga Namahage Transformation Experience
Transform into a namahage—a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage—and experience Oga's traditional customs firsthand
At the Namahage Museum in Oga City, you can deeply learn about the namahage customs registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The museum displays over 150 diverse namahage masks from various districts of the Oga Peninsula, and their powerful presence is truly awe-inspiring. At the adjoining tradition hall, you can observe vivid reenactments of actual namahage customs. What's particularly noteworthy is the immersive experience program where you can dress in namahage costumes and masks to transform. The experience of wearing the heavy kede (straw costume) and shouting 'Are there any crying children?' is a popular activity trending on social media.
