Nokogiriyama Nihon-ji Temple and Jigoku-nozoki
A spectacular scenic spot on the Boso Peninsula. The thrilling "Jigoku-nozoki" (Hell's Peeping) from the cliff edge and the giant stone Buddha carved into the rock face are breathtakingly impressive.
Nokogiriyama is a thrilling scenic spot known for the cliff-edge viewpoint "Jigoku-nozoki" (Hell's Peeping), despite being a relatively low mountain at 329m above sea level. The entire mountain serves as the grounds of Nihon-ji Temple, featuring the impressive 31m-high "Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai," Japan's largest stone Buddha carved into a cliff face. The Sengohyaku Rakan-dō path, lined with over 1,500 stone Buddhist statues, is also worth seeing. A ropeway takes visitors close to the summit, making it accessible even for those without much physical stamina. From the mountaintop, a 360-degree panoramic view stretches from Tokyo Bay to Mount Fuji.
