An elaborate and ornate World Heritage shrine that enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu. A must-see for its intricate carvings, including the three monkeys and the famous Sleeping Cat.
A shrine built in 1617 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. The shrine buildings, including the Yomeimon Gate, are adorned with intricately colored carvings numbering over 5,000. The three monkeys representing 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' and the Sleeping Cat, said to be carved by Hidari Jingoro, are particularly famous. Climbing the stone steps to the inner shrine leads to Ieyasu's tomb, surrounded by a majestic cedar-lined pathway and a sacred space. The site is especially beautiful during spring's fresh greenery and autumn's crimson foliage seasons, drawing many visitors.
