Nayoro Sun Pillar Phenomenon
名寄市, Hokkaido
Mystical spectacle of sun pillars seen in the frigid cold of Nayoro
Sun pillars are a natural phenomenon that occurs during the harsh winter when temperatures drop below -20°C (-4°F), where diamond dust in the air reflects sunlight to create vertical columns of light. Nayoro City is particularly well-known in Hokkaido as an area where sun pillars can be easily observed, with the Chiebun district famous as an observation spot. The best viewing time is early morning from January to February, and Sun Pillar Park also offers winter activities.
