Ōmiwa Shrine and Mt. Miwa Pilgrimage
桜井市, Nara
Make a pilgrimage to Mt. Miwa, the sacred object, at Ōmiwa Shrine, one of Japan's oldest shrines
Ōmiwa Shrine is one of Japan's oldest shrines, with Mt. Miwa itself serving as its sacred deity. Without a main shrine building, it preserves the ancient form of worship in which devotees pay direct respects to Mt. Miwa from the worship hall. The pilgrimage to Mt. Miwa takes approximately 2 hours round trip, and the mountain interior is a sacred space where photography is prohibited. Sake breweries—said to be the birthplace of Japanese sake—are scattered throughout the foot of the mountain.
