Ishibutai Kofun is one of Japan's largest square tumuli, constructed in the early 7th century and believed to be the tomb of Soga no Umako. With the burial mound lost, the exposed megaliths weigh a total of approximately 2,300 tons, and visitors can enter and view the interior stone chamber. Standing beneath the ceiling stones, you are overwhelmed by the magnificence of ancient civil engineering. In spring, you can also enjoy cherry blossom picnics on the grassy lawns surrounding the site.
