Nara Ink-Making Experience
Experience making nigiri sumi (hand-pressed ink) at a traditional Nara ink workshop. Touch the 1400-year-old art of ink-making
Nara Prefecture produces about 95% of Japan's domestic ink, making it the ink capital of Japan. At traditional workshops, you can observe the manufacturing process of ink made from pine soot and oil soot, and participate in a "nigiri sumi experience" where you shape warm ink blocks by hand. The process of molding ink with the warmth of your palms leaves your fingerprints and hand shape permanently embedded, creating a one-of-a-kind original ink piece. The drying process takes about 3 months, and the finished product will be delivered to your home. This experience is recommended not only for calligraphy enthusiasts but also for those interested in traditional crafts.
