Visit the 202 stone steps of Shiogama Shrine, the chief shrine of Mutsu Province, and a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot
Shiogama Shrine is an ancient shrine with over 1,200 years of history as the chief shrine of Mutsu Province and one of Tohoku's most significant ancient shrines. The 202 stone steps of the main approach are magnificent, and from within the shrine grounds spreads a spectacular view of Shiogama Port and Matsushima Bay. The Shiogama cherry tree within the shrine is a designated national natural monument, with pale pink double blossoms blooming magnificently from late April through early May. The confectionery shops and Shiogama-yaki pottery stores along the shrine approach also exude considerable charm.
