Akiu Falls and Futakuchi Gorge
A nature walk through the scenic gorges of Akiu Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, and Rairai Gorge in the Sendai area
Akiu Falls, located in Taihaku Ward, Sendai City, is a magnificent waterfall with a 55-meter drop and is counted as one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls. The water spray and roaring sound visible from the observation platform are breathtaking, and you can walk down the trail to get very close to the waterfall basin. It's about 15 minutes by car from Akiu Hot Spring, and it's standard to visit it as part of a hot spring experience. Going further in opens up to Futakuchi Gorge, where you can fully enjoy the scenic beauty created by strange rocks and clear streams along a roughly 2.5 km walking trail. The autumn foliage season is particularly magnificent, and it's a treasure house of nature that can be enjoyed as a day trip from Sendai City.
