Mikasa City Museum・Ammonite Fossils
三笠市, Hokkaido
See 100 million-year-old fossils up close in Mikasa, the holy land of ammonites
Mikasa City is one of Japan's leading fossil sites for ammonites. The Mikasa City Museum displays approximately 1,000 ammonite fossils discovered in Hokkaido, including giant specimens exceeding 1 meter in diameter. The exhibit recreating the Cretaceous marine world through dioramas is truly impressive. At the outdoor museum, you can observe actual outcrops where ammonites are found, and fossil excavation experience programs are offered during the summer season.
