Matsue Castle is a hilltop castle built in 1611 by Horio Yoshiharu, and its keep is designated as a National Treasure as one of only 12 original keeps remaining throughout Japan. It is affectionately known as "Chidori Castle" due to its black-painted wooden board exterior, and from the top floor you can overlook Lake Shinji and the Matsue cityscape. The Horikawa moat surrounding the castle is popular for sightseeing boat cruises called "Horikawa Cruises," where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the castle town over approximately 50 minutes while listening to your boatman's commentary. Shiroyama Park is also known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, drawing many visitors in spring.
