The Kobo-ichi market held on the 21st of every month at Toji Temple in Kyoto is a temple fair commemorating the monthly death anniversary of Kobo Daishi (the Great Master Kukai). About 1,200 stalls line the temple grounds, offering everything from antiques, vintage kimono, ceramics, old books, and handmade goods to Kyoto pickles and grilled mochi. Kimono and obi in particular can be found at reasonable prices, making it very popular with foreign tourists. The bustling market scene against the backdrop of the five-story pagoda is a quintessentially Kyoto sight. For treasure hunting, early morning is recommended. The market is held rain or shine.
