Direct sales shops from Kiyomizu-yaki pottery kilns on Gojozaka. From everyday use to collectible pieces, an array of exquisite Kyoyaki pottery is available
Gojozaka in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City is a pottery district where Kiyomizu-yaki (Kyoyaki) kilns and direct sales shops are concentrated. Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, with about 400 years of history, is characterized by delicate painting and elegant colors, offering a diverse range of items including tea bowls, tea cups, and flower vases. Since these are sold directly from the kilns, they can be purchased at more reasonable prices than market rates, and you may discover one-of-a-kind pieces by individual artisans. During the annual pottery festival in August, about 400 stalls line Gojozaka, creating a bustling atmosphere filled with treasure hunters. It's recommended to visit in combination with a pilgrimage to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
