Fukuchiyama Castle and Castle Town Stroll
Fukuchiyama Castle and castle town built by Akechi Mitsuhide. Stone walls with repurposed stones and the Mitsuhide Museum are highlights
Fukuchiyama Castle in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a castle built by Akechi Mitsuhide after pacifying the Tanba region. The stone walls contain numerous "repurposed stones" - stone pagodas and tombstones from temples - telling the story of the castle's construction. The museum inside the castle keep displays Mitsuhide's life and the history of the Tanba region. The castle town is dotted with Goryō Shrine (dedicated to Mitsuhide) and old townhouses, while the walking path along the Yura River has atmospheric charm. The autumn Dokkosei Festival is a major event that brings the castle town to life.
