Appreciating the Gozan Okuribi (Daimonji Fires)
Kyoto, Kyoto
Appreciate Kyoto's Gozan Okuribi, which illuminates the night sky during Obon, from along the Kamogawa River
Held every year on August 16, Gozan Okuribi is a traditional event that concludes Kyoto's Obon season. The five sacred fires of Daimonji, Myoho, Funagata, Hidarimonji, and Torii-gata emerge on the mountainsides at night—a fantastical sight representing the solemn ritual of sending spirits off. With multiple viewpoints including along the Kamogawa River, Kitayama-dori, and Funaokayama Park, it is a signature summer symbol of Kyoto.
