Kushiro Wetland
Japan's largest wetland. A grand natural landscape spreads where Red-crowned Cranes dance.
Kushiro Wetland is Japan's largest wetland, boasting an area of approximately 28,000 hectares, and was designated as a Ramsar Convention registered wetland in 1980. It is a treasure trove of ecosystems where diverse wildlife including Red-crowned Cranes (Special Natural Monuments), Japanese giant salamanders, and Ezo deer inhabit. From Hosaoka Observation Platform, you can take in a panoramic view of the meandering Kushiro River and vast wetland, overwhelmed by its grandeur. In summer, canoe tours down the Kushiro River are popular, allowing you to enjoy pristine nature from the water. In winter, you can observe the elegant dance of Red-crowned Cranes at their feeding grounds.
