Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
A beautiful historic scenic district where warehouse mansions line the Kurashiki River with white walls and rows of willows.
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a preserved area of the historic town of Kurashiki that flourished as a government-controlled territory during the Edo period. Warehouse mansions with white namako-style walls and lattice windows line the Kurashiki River, with green willows and river boats adding charm to the scenery. The Ohara Museum of Art, which houses Western paintings by El Greco, Monet, and others, is Japan's first private Western art museum and a landmark of the district. There are plenty of sightseeing spots including Kurashiki Denim Street and cafes and shops in renovated townhouses, with fantastical illuminated scenery to enjoy at night.
