Kumamoto Castle
One of Japan's three most famous castles, built by Kato Kiyomasa. The main tower undergoing restoration and the magnificent stone walls with their distinctive 'Samurai Reversal' curve are truly awe-inspiring.
Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan's three most famous castles, built by Kato Kiyomasa in 1607. Its most distinctive feature is the uniquely curved stone walls known as the 'Samurai Reversal.' The castle sustained significant damage during the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, but restoration of the main keep was completed in 2021, and visitors can once again enjoy panoramic views of Kumamoto city from the top floor. A special viewing corridor allows close observation of the restoration work, where visitors can experience both the castle's resilience and the progress of its reconstruction. In spring, approximately 800 cherry blossoms adorn the castle, making it a renowned cherry blossom viewing destination.
