Koenji Awa Odori
Tokyo's largest Awa Odori festival where one million people gather every August. A summer tradition that envelops Koenji's shopping streets in passionate excitement.
Koenji Awa Odori is Tokyo's representative summer festival that began in 1957. Held on the last weekend of August every year, approximately 10,000 dancers parade through the shopping streets around Koenji Station. Boasting a scale second only to the authentic festival in Tokushima, the powerful dances of the "ren" groups overwhelm spectators. Food stalls line the streets where you can also enjoy local gourmet food. The excellent accessibility, just steps from JR Koenji Station, is also attractive, and the "niwaka-ren" groups that anyone can join on the spot are popular too.
