Muroto Geopark Coastal Walk
A coastal walk to experience Earth's dynamism at Muroto Cape, a UNESCO World Geopark site. A museum of strange rocks and geological layers.
Muroto City in Kochi Prefecture is a geologically significant area accredited as a UNESCO World Geopark. At the coastal walking path of Muroto Cape, you can observe up close the cross-sections of geological layers formed by uplifted deep-sea sediments from tens of millions of years ago and turbidites (turbid flow deposits). When you participate in a guided tour, you can get easy-to-understand explanations of how these strange rocks and geological layers were formed, and feel the dynamism of Earth's 4.6 billion-year history. The Michito Cave, where Kobo Daishi attained enlightenment, is also a must-see spot.
