Kirishima Shrine is one of the foremost power spots in southern Kyushu, enshrining Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the protagonist of the Descent of the Divine Grandson myth. The vermillion-lacquered shrine building that appears as you walk through the approach path surrounded by giant cedar trees is magnificent architecture designated as a National Treasure. It is also famous as the place visited by Sakamoto Ryōma on his honeymoon, and is said to offer benefits for romantic connections and good fortune. The surrounding Kirishima Hot Spring Resort is a hot spring paradise offering diverse spring qualities. A trip combining trekking in the Kirishima Mountain Range or climbing from Takachihogawara is also recommended.
