Great Buddha of Kamakura, Kotoku-in
A National Treasure Amida Buddha statue approximately 13 meters tall. The Great Buddha seated outdoors is an iconic symbol of Kamakura.
A bronze Amida Buddha statue said to have begun construction around 1252. The statue is approximately 11.3 meters tall, with a total height of approximately 13.35 meters including the pedestal, and weighs approximately 121 tons. Previously enshrined in the Great Buddha Hall, the building was swept away by a great tsunami during the Muromachi period, after which it has been cherished as an open-air Great Buddha. Interior viewing is also possible, allowing visitors to see the finest of casting techniques up close. The temple grounds also feature a poetry monument by Yosano Akiko. It is within walking distance of Enoden Hase Station and recommended to visit together with Hase-dera Temple.
