Marugame Castle and the Beauty of Stone Walls
One of the twelve existing original castle keeps, Marugame Castle. The beautiful stone walls, boasting Japan's greatest height, are called a famous castle renowned as "stone artistry."
Marugame Castle is one of the twelve existing original castle keeps remaining from the Edo period, and its four-tiered stone walls boasting Japan's greatest height (approximately 60m) are the main highlight. The stone walls, which draw graceful curves called "fan slope," are truly stone artistry. While the castle keep is Japan's smallest existing original keep, its dignified appearance is beautiful, and from the summit of the castle mountain, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Sanuki Plain and the Seto Inland Sea. In spring, it is also known as a famous cherry blossom spot, with approximately 1,000 Someiyoshino cherry trees adorning the stone walls. Free guided tours by volunteer guides are also conducted at the foot of the castle, where you can learn deeply about the history of the stone walls.
