Sumita Town Kesen Tanabata Festival
気仙郡住田町, Iwate
A summer tradition featuring the unique Tanabata decorations passed down in the Kesen region
The Kesen Tanabata Festival in Sumita Town is a traditional event held around the 7th day of the lunar calendar's 7th month. Elaborate decorations adorn floats over 10 meters tall, which parade through town accompanied by the music of flutes and drums. Unlike the Sendai Tanabata, the simple yet powerful Kesen-style decorations are handmade by local people. The nighttime lantern floating is also enchanting.
