Esashi Fujiwara Festival
Golden Week tradition featuring a warrior procession and reenactment of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's eastward journey, conveying the glory of the Oshu Fujiwara clan to the present day
The Fujiwara Festival held every year during Golden Week in Esashi Ward, Oshu City is a spring celebration that conveys the history of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, which ruled Tohoku during the Heian period, to the present day. The main attraction is the eastward journey procession of Lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune, which becomes a topic of conversation each year as a celebrity guest plays the role of Yoshitsune. It is spectacular to see approximately 100 people dressed as armored warriors and in Heian period clothing parading through the streets lined with traditional warehouses. At Esashi Fujiwara Village, Heian period buildings have been restored, and you can also experience wearing aristocratic clothing. It's a hidden gem for Golden Week where you can immerse yourself in historical romance.
