Iwami Ginzan
UNESCO World Heritage silver mine ruins that once produced one-third of the world's silver.
Iwami Ginzan was a mine that boasted the world's largest-class silver production from the 16th to 17th centuries and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. The Ryugenji Mao (mining tunnel) is open to the public, where you can glimpse the mining activities of that era. The townscape of Omori preserves its historical landscape with samurai residences and merchant houses, some of which have been transformed into cafes and galleries. Its history of coexistence with nature and environmental conservation was evaluated as a key factor in its UNESCO World Heritage designation. Cycling tours by rental bike are recommended.
