Itsukushima Shrine
A World Heritage shrine featuring a beautiful vermillion torii gate and shrine building floating on the sea.
Itsukushima Shrine is said to have been founded in 593 and is a World Heritage site, symbolizing 'Aki's Miyajima,' one of Japan's Three Great Views. The shrine building and grand torii gate on the sea, which change appearance with the tides, were built by Taira no Kiyomori in their current form, and their elegant architecture embodies the essence of shinden-zukuri style. At high tide, the shrine building appears to float on the sea, while at low tide, you can walk right up to the torii gate. A representative shrine of Japan, it displays beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter.
