Tamba Sasayama City in Hyogo Prefecture is the birthplace of Tamba-yaki, one of Japan's six ancient kilns. At kilns with about 800 years of history, you can experience authentic pottery making using hand-building and potter's wheel techniques. The distinctive subdued beauty of Tamba-yaki comes from natural glazing achieved through firing in climbing kilns. The vessels you create will be fired and delivered to your home after about 2 months. When touring the kilns, you can enjoy comparing the unique works of each workshop. The autumn pottery festival is particularly lively.
