Miyajima Shamoji (Rice Paddle) Making Experience
Make a wish on Miyajima's famous rice paddle. A workshop where you can experience traditional woodworking techniques.
The shamoji (rice paddle), which is also a symbol of Miyajima, is said to have been conceived by a monk in the Edo period, inspired by the shape of the biwa (Japanese lute) held by Benzaiten. At workshops on the island, you can experience making shamoji using cherry wood under the guidance of craftsmen who carry on the tradition of Miyajima shamoji. The original shamoji that you carve and shape yourself, and brand with a hot iron, makes a special souvenir. Known as a lucky charm for prayers for victory, it is also used for cheering at sports events.
