Mount Haguro Stone Steps Pilgrimage
A pilgrimage to Mount Haguro, one of the Three Mountains of Dewa, climbing 2446 stone steps through cedar tree groves
Mount Haguro, one of the Three Mountains of Dewa, is a sacred site of Shugendo with 2446 stone steps leading to the Sanshingasshaisaden at the summit. The approach path, surrounded by cedar groves aged 300–600 years, is designated as a Special Natural Monument, and the National Treasure Five-Story Pagoda stands quietly along the way. The approximately one-hour journey of climbing step by step is a time of prayer that purifies body and mind. The mochi enjoyed at the tea house at the summit is exceptional as a reward for your ascent. The approach path covered in winter snow is also dreamlike, offering the changing beauty of all four seasons.
