Tomioka Silk Mill
A UNESCO World Heritage modern industrial site. Learn about French-style brick architecture and the history of silk at this Meiji-era silk mill.
Tomioka Silk Mill was established in 1872 as Japan's first full-scale mechanized silk reeling factory and was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2014. The brick buildings were constructed under the guidance of French engineer Paul Brunat, showcasing a distinctive architectural beauty that blends Japanese and Western styles. The silk reeling workshop preserves original French-made silk reeling machines from that era, and detailed explanations are available through guided tours. The surrounding area also features Konnyaku Park and Gunma Safari Park, making it perfect for a full day of sightseeing.
