Summer Night of Gujo Odori
A 400-year-old bon dance festival. A summer night festival where anyone can join in spontaneously
Gujo Odori, held for about 30 nights from mid-July to early September each year, is one of Japan's three major bon dance festivals. Its greatest feature is being a participatory festival where tourists and locals dance together. During the four days of Obon, it becomes 'Tetsuya Odori' (all-night dancing) where people dance until the following morning. There are 10 types of dances including Kawasaki, Harukoma, and Neko no Ko, with simple choreography that even beginners can learn quickly. It is also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
